Advance Placement High School Curriculum

Introduction

The Maui Media Lab Electronic Media Arts & Science Advance Placement High School Curriculum is designed to provide supplemental professional development and vocational skills training along with requisite technology resources to high school age students. Students participating in this class are exposed to professional caliber audio and video media production tools and training, and encouraged to develop their skills in at least one specific focus. An emphasis is placed on "learning to teach" as well as "learning to use" skills training. The curriculum as presented here consists of a list of required resources, lesson plans, performance assessments and a glossary of related terms and systemic issues involved with the teaching of this material.

Overview

The Maui Media Lab Electronic Media Arts & Science Advance Placement High School Curriculum includes a resource guide, lesson plans, a performance assessment and glossary designed to assist high school teachers that endeavour to teach advance placement word processing, Internet and networking, digital imaging and computer graphics, digital video editing and post production, digital audio & CD production and radio production and broadcasting to their students. An emphasis is placed on the responsible use of advanced media tools and associated skills to document current events and record the unique cultural heritage within the local community.

Methodology

The Maui Media Lab Electronic Media Arts & Science Advance Placement High School Curriculum has been constructed for use by high school students in home school, private and public school environments located in inner city, rural, suburban and urban communities and is especially appropriate for students residing in traditionally underserved neighborhoods.

In particular, the Maui Media Lab Electronic Media Arts & Science High School Curriculum specifically addresses the requirements mandated for the United States Department of Education by Public Law 101-392, THE CARL D. PERKINS VOCATIONAL AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION ACT.

Goal

The primary goal of the Maui Media Lab Electronic Media Arts & Science Advance Placement High School Curriculum is to address the requirements as set forth by the aforementioned Public Law 101-392 to "prepare individuals for paid or unpaid employment in current or emerging occupations requiring other than a baccalaureate or advanced degree by providing competency-based applied learning that contributes to an individual's academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning, problem solving skills, and the occupational-specific skills necessary for economic independence as a productive and contributing member of society."

Conclusion

Community involvement is absolutely required in order to establish the technical requirements and vocational skills that should be tought to high school students. If technology expenditures are intended to help solve a problem or address academic or other issues, it is crucial to specifically identify what problems need to be solved, and to clearly define what issues need to be addressed, and how technology resources will be used in pursuit of these goals.

Independent, objective resource utilization assessments must be performed regularly by local business, community experts to ensure that purchased technology resources are properly installed, configured, maintained and operated.

Finally, and most importantly, vocational and professional training should be tought as an adjunct and should not supplant traditional academic requirements such as reading, writing, arithmetic, history, science, music, foreign language, drama and the arts.
