Local Area Network

Description

A Local Area Network is a highly desirable resource. It allows computers and printers to be connected together so that resources and files can be efficiently shared.

Teacher's Guide

Make sure your local area network is configured as a 100BaseT Ethernet network. Many Ethernet networks are configured as a 10BaseT, effectively reducing their speed by a factor of 10. Files that could take 4 minutes to transfer on a 100BaseT Ethernet will take 40 minutes on a 10BaseT network.

Recommendation for the 2000-2001 Academic Year

Maui Media Lab recommends 100BaseT Ethernet and RJ-45 connections, a long with an Apple Basestation to connect your printers and wired computers to wireless notebook computers brought into the class room. An Airport Basestation is also used to share a single dialup Internet connection with all of the computers in your classroom as a backup, or even primary means of Internet connectivity.
